After an understandable uproar over a mandatory procedure that federal law would consider rape, Virginia legislators have opted to forgo the invasive and most definitely uncomfortable procedure for women seeking abortions. On top of a big invasion of privacy for all women, the legislation could have re-traumatized women who sought abortions because of rapes. A meeting last night led legislators to reconsider the vagina wand provision, reaching a compromise that would make the procedure voluntary, but not mandatory, reports The Washington Post. We're not sure what woman might choose to have an ultrasound used in this way, but, now they get a choice. And with that, the never-ending reproduction debates continue.

And here's self-proclaimed pro-lifer, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell backing away from the proposal in an official statement released this afternoon...
In other words, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell pissed off a lot more people than he expected and decided he had better bail out if he wants a chance of being re-elected again.

Thank g-d :) someone had some sense in the Virginian government to see the wrong of such a cruel and invasive procedure and listen to the voice of the people.

I still feel none of it, not even having the optional choice should be considered by the government. The decision to have this procedure done should be, and only be, between the doctor and their patient and no one else.

I hear the legislation was held up because the legislators were not satisfied that it was extreme enough!
This is NOT about Mc Donnell reconsidering the bill, but the LANGUAGE of the bill. There is NO concensus on redacting the invasive part of the bill, but reconsideration on how to WORD IT, so it can pass without resistance.
They STILL want Virginia government inside women's vaginas, they just haven't figured out how to write it, so women won't notice.

While it may not be mandatory to have the trans-vaginal ultrasound, I thought it was STILL MANDATORY to have the results before you can have the abortion......
I think Bob is just splitting hairs, trying to look moderate while the bill is still a POS......

That about sums it up Spocky, the is praying to be picked for VP so that Vag-sonogram boat was taking on water like the Titanic. Well that and the fact they were opening up the state for charges of RAPE under state law.

I was once a pro-life Democrat, but after taking a look at the people I was siding with, I found myself more and more pro-choice. Good job, you idiotic fanatics. I'd rather see an abortion than to be associated with y'all.

I am pro-choice and a christian. I cannot and will not invite my own opinions and beliefs into such a deeply personal decision. I had a high risk pregnancy and my husband and I decided to stop an a sonogram and what ever GOD gave us we would love and keep but I understand that others can make a different choice for a whole host of personal reasons and IMO it is their personal business. I can't promise I would make the same decision if I was raped I would have to make that decision if it happened to me and my choice is still my own personal choice with my husband and my GOD as I understand him. NO one has an abortion without deep introspection and thought so they don't need the added burden or judgement from strangers who have not real skin in the matter.

GA, up until this political season, I would have challenged those pro-life zealots by asking them why they don't advocate charging women who have abortions with murder. If they are not willing to do that, then they don't really consider the fetus to be a human being with all the rights of an actual born person. But the way things are going now, I'm starting to think they will be following their position to its logical conclusion and we will have a whole new category of murderers--women who foolishly believe they have the right to make their own decisions based on what is best for THEM. Why does having a uterus suddenly make us second class citizens?
I had a miscarriage in my late 30's. It was traumatic enough as it was. Having to prove it was a spontaneous abortion would have devastated me even more.

I had one as well and I cannot imagine being compelled to have a sonogram while I was loosing my child. We have to believe that women are autonomous beings independent of men and they have the GOD given right to make decision for their own bodies. Free and easy access to contraceptives are the best defense against abortions in this country but when they start to even question a woman's right to that then we begin to see that it less about abortion and more about making women second class citizens IMO.

From what I understand the information that the state needs to allow an abortion required from the ultrasound cannot be obtained from a conventional Ultrasound. No information-no abortion? So how do they get the information? Who makes that decision? No the state does not require the invasive ultrasound but..........
