The GOP presidential candidates are becoming more comfortable trafficking in stereotypes when it comes to African-Americans and welfare benefits. Surprise Iowa frontrunner Rick Santorum recently declared (and later denied) that “I don’t want to make black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money; I want to give them the opportunity to go out and earn the money.” The NAACP blasted Santorum for “inaccurate and outrageous” remarks that “lifts up old race-based stereotypes about public assistance.”

Today in New Hampshire, another GOP presidential hopeful offered his own take. Consistently slamming President Obama as “the best food stamp president in history,” Newt Gingrich tried to paint himself as a more desirable alternative to town hall attendees, insisting he’d be “the best paycheck president in American history.” Singling out African-Americans, Gingrich declared that he’d attend the NAACP just to tell African-Americans why they should “not be satisfied with food stamps”:

But rather than seeing America’s most vulnerable populations as deserving of aid, Gingrich prefers to see them as lazy drug-users who prefer to put their benefits towards a Hawaii vacation.

Well, it's just as I said about Santorum. This is no shocking surprise. He too is just stating the right-wing conventional wisdom in regard to black people.

I would love to see a group of 100-200 unemployed folks follow newt around and demand he hire them for his campiagn staff. Or better yet go each of the companies that have donated to newt's campaign show up at their offices and say "Newt says we should demand jobs".

I think that's an excellent idea. I wonder what Newt would think about that?

Then Newt Gingrich tell the dumb ass republicans to pass the Presidents Jobs Bill.

And Newt I think Repub/Baggers should demand the right to Bi*ch slap any GOP candidate that waste their time selling books, whining while pretending to run for President.

Newt Gingrich always has been and always will be a douchebag.
However, I have to give him props for at least trying to disguise his douchebaggery by trying to appear as if he is genuinely reaching out to the black community. But this still isn't passing the smell test. I'm trying to find an explanation or a clip to explain what led up to his statement and what the "context" was. So far, I'm having a difficult time.

They don't need a context. I mean, Santorum's statement about black...uh, "blah" people, was prompted by an audience member asking him a question about foreign influences on the U.S. economy.

I agree they don't need a context. I guess I'm just curious to see how Newt would try to spin this. And to be fair, I'd like to know what prompted that statement - was it even remotely related to what was asked or being discussed or did he simply pull it out of thin air like Santorum?

More information on the story. I don't think it really answers your question, but it seems to clarify the intent was just to bash the President, and to make up "facts" as needed to do so.

first off it's very imperioous and condescending of newt to think that he should go to a naacp conference and tell african americans anything. he clearly did not read teh history of the organization. the naacp has been in the forefront of fighting for full employment and agaisnt employment discrimination for all people, not just african americans.
second how long does anyone think that he would get to stand at the podium spewing that reactionary bs before he was run out of the conference and the building?
he acts as if african ameriacns are children who he can lecture down to.
come on newt, i want to attend that session and watch the results of, and reaction to your "speech".

Why don't you go to these corporations that are donating billions of dollars to Obama's campaign and ask them for a job, or better yet ask Obama where are the freaking jobs?

Mc Spocky,
8.5% sounds good, right, WRONG, the reason the rate fell is because of part time season jobs for the holiday's, take a look at Gallups underemployment rate, Gallup counts them all, it's up from Nov at 17.8% to 18.1% in Dec., so many people no longer counted in the Gov. stats, either they no longer qualify for benefits or they dropped out of the job market and are no longer counted, the Gov. cut 20k jobs in Dec. alone, yes 8.5% sounds great but when all is figured in it's not so good.
I knew there would be right wing spin. FAUX news has been working hard at it and it was only a matter of time before their followers began parroting it. LOL
