We don't do a Halloween parade at my school, we do a book character parade as to eliminate all the bloody scary stuff etc....

I am planning to be Waldo from the Where's Waldo book series... I promise to sneak in to as many pictures as I can that day!

:)

We had a "Storybook" parade where I worked, ERich. You'll look great as "Waldo" and the kids will love it too. I wonder if they'll find you.

I just need to kick off my shoes, get into some slippers and jammies (I don't care that's it's only 8 pm, jammies are on my horizon). If I was at js's spot in the universe, I'd be wearing a muumuu and sitting on the lanai. Here's some Halloween music, but I wouldn't listen all the way to the end; I think it's 13 hours' worth.

Hi all! Thank you for the invitation to your Halloween party, McSpocky. :-)

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. Mostly, because it is the day after my birthday. But, all my life my birthday has been celebrated on Halloween so I get to have a costume party for my birthday. :-)

When I was a kid, weather permitting, we always did a cookout, like hot dogs or burgers, and then we all went Trick or Treating as a group. Then we would come back and have cake and ice cream, and everyone would wind up swapping some of our loot. When we were too old to go Trick or Treating we just stayed at the house and had a dance party, played charades and handed out candy to the kids that came to the door.

I never had anyone pass up an invite to my birthday party. It wasn't for the presents, it was always a 'no present' party, as too many parents were not able to afford a present in those days. It was just for the fun of having my friends there, everyone coming in costume, having a costume contest, and just having a good time. My Dad was police officer at the time, and usually got home from work about the time everyone started to show up. So, every year his 'costume' was a police officer. One year one of the kids asked me "Why does your Dad want to be a policeman every year?" :-)

Even now, every Halloween the grandkids get to throw Grammy Bear a costume birthday party. And they share some of their Trick or Treat loot with me. :-)

Thanks for the invite, McSpocky. What a great idea. This Hallowe'en, I'm getting into a costume that hasn't seen the light of day since 1982: my belly dance costume. Of course, I'll wear a long-sleeved leotard because 65 year old skin is not 30 year old skin!, but I finally can wear my belt again, which is my accomplishment for this year!

So, jingle jingle jingle - and I don't mean S. Claus and the reindeer!

ERich -- our district has staff development on the 31st (I know...stupid of them to have the kids off on the most fun day of the year!!)

All the pumpkin carving, dressing up, etc is the prior Friday. Still don't know what my daughter is going to wear (she wants to be Kiki -- but I'm still looking for a black smock dress for her to wear, she can borrow a black stuffed cat that looks JUST like Jiji from her cousin)

My mom however is supposed to be Molly Weasley since her school's faculty is dressing up with a Harry Potter theme -- I think she should have chosen Dolores Umbridge, but they're very similar costuming (one pink, one frumpy)

Startin' a little early, aren't we? You know all that candy's going to be gone well b4 Halloween even gets here! Those geckos js brings around have already made serious inroads into the M & Ms [stashes bag for later when supplies run thin].

Too spookily coincedental....while you were getting the party started last night, I was putting up all the music for it! I did an article called Top 13 (b/c Top 10 is so BTDT) Classic Halloween Tunes (none of that Monster Mash stuff, just rock) & posted it to Halloween Hall :P Go see, it's nice ;-)

Want some spooky background music?

Sorry I can't attend your party on Halloween. I have a yearly appointment for people watching here in Portland. There is a corner down town where there are three gay bars--one leather--one trans--several hipster dance clubs--and a couple of the most expensive restaurants in town, all within a block of each other. Best people watching place and time ever.

Ah, I miss the views of Portland. I did enjoy what I could while visiting last summer. Hawthorne Blvd was one of the best viewing spots. I need a trip to Red Light for a costume. Sigh, guess the old mu'u mu'u will have to do this year. I could go for the coconut shells and grass skirt but they are too itchy for my liking. Have fun, take photos and post them. That would be fantastic.

I don't take pictures as I enjoy good health and wish to keep it that way. Besides, much of the "wildlife" there is very timid and disappears into the underbrush at the sight of a camera, and the fun part is the interaction between the various groups, which really cant be captured in photography. As far as hawthorn blvd goes--Hipsters and hippies aren't really that different--except in age, and therefore they don't provide many interesting interactions. But when you see a guy in butt-less chaps and harness, asking a guy in a tux and woman in furs for a light--that's just precious.

ok... here is the saddest , most pathetic Holloween story I have .... I can laugh now but at the time ??? lol

when I was in Kindergarten we all had to dress in costume and go trick or treating in the eight grade classes.

I however had no costume thanks to my mom. The only thing she had for me was a clown red fright wig she pulled out of the bottom of a rusty metal cabinet. Covered with rust it was and horribly disfigured. Of course I refused it.

Off to school I went in my uniform ( catholic school ) . Being the only one without a costume , my teacher Mrs. Zerba ( yes I still remember her name ! ) fashioned for me a pumpkin mask out of orange construction paper and black marker. A rubber band fixed to it to hold this to my face.

off we all went.

of course the taunts of pumpkin face and laughs from those 8th graders ? what a scar !

but that's still not as bad as Margie C. peeing herself in the 3rd grade !

great story, I peed my pants when I was in Kindergarten. During a movie, I was so embarrassed, know as I am getting older, I pee when I cough, sneeze,

So I guess the saying is true,

We were in San Francisco one Hallowe'en weekend for a conference for hubby. We took off and went to Castro for the festivities. Truly fun. We stopped into a bar where an old queen plied us with liquor and tried to shock us (two older straights). Ha. He'd say one thing, I'd come back with my transgender son, and on it went until he finally said that we could come back anytime that we were truly fun and good sports. I told him that we were on his side and always had been, hugged and we were out the door to the best sight ever:

Upstairs three guys in long sequin gowns, 'fros and mustaches lip-singing to the Supremes. Best ever!

That was a mighty funny skit and the costume really rocks, Ripley! Thanks.

I worked with elementary students for a long time so peeing one's pants is quite normal in my mind. I was with my friend in downtown Portland in the late 50's and we always laughed so much and one day I peed on the sidewalk, which made us laugh even more. When the children would cry and lament over their wet garments I'd tell them that story and they loved it. Tricks of the trade I guess.

Sadly, most of the festivities in the Castro have stopped due to violence and vandalism. When I first moved here in 1996, it was crazy fun, then it was moved to Civic Center, now it's pretty quiet with a huge police presence.

RaisedByWolves - #1.48 - I was at Disneyland in June of 1959, and I still have the Promo book that year that they handed out that told all about Disneyland. That was also the Year they opened the Matterhorn, and they had a special TV show for it, with mountain climbers going up and down the outside of the Matterhorn, and ice dancers skating around on a makeshift pond at the foot of the Matterhorn. We watched them film the who thing, and Walt Disney was there in person as well. I don't recall they had the Matterhorn ride opened at that time. But, they had the Indian village and the Indian dancers in costume in Adventureland, and the an and Woman dressed up in space suites with the clear bubble headgear in Tomorrow land. Things have changed since them, but, many of the original rides are still there. I also have our book of tickets that have A,B,C,D, and E ticket rides. We have a couple of the E tickets in two of the booklets that we never got to use before they went out of use. We were living in Texas at the time and came out to visit family in Rosemead CA and went to Disneyland for the day while we were here. By the time we moved to Calif a few years later the tickets were longer being used.

Zip, sounds like a case of "Boo Humbug." Takes a while for me to get into Christmas; it gets more commercial every year ... when I start seeing Christmas stuff going up in stores in early September, I begin to groan a little bit. But this year, I hope it's better.

cobaltblue - Christmas stuff was already on the shelves in many stores here in most of the stores here in the San Bernardino CA area by mid-Sept. It was full bore by mid-Oct, and will likely get into to full Christmas mode starting Tuesday next week. I remember it didn't start until the day after Thanksgiving. But, for the past 15-20 years it seems like it starts the day after Independence Day!

Samhain it is! Tink, so that's where your handle came from!!! Good to meet another long-time Disney person. I went every year near my birthday after it opened; but when I turned 50 (and actually had those "real paychecks") we went to Disney World for a week. Fun and now my only respite, but so not the same.

Tink, I am seeing Christmas items in FL too. I use to love all the holidays. I would make someone something special or I gave food from my garden. My working hours became too long and I had the money to buy friends and family items I knew they needed or loved. If feels insulting in these times and to commercialized.

If there are children involved, it is different. They give us their joy.

I saw Christmas stuff at the Dollar Store and at one Big Lots here in St. Pete in August. AUGUST!

We have committed to shopping only at local stores, keeping our list strictly to immediate family and reinstate celebrating "Little Christmas" on January 6th...where we all cook dinner together each of making our favorite dishes and making a little something for each other...to celebrate "The Gifts of the Magi."

We are taking back Christmas!

I even like the idea of stores bringing back Layaway the way our parents used to buy things.

Puts you back in control.

I know someone who shops all year up until Christmas Eve. She has Excel "Strategy" spreadsheets for each store, etc.

It's a sickness. It's actually rather obscene.

Last year....we decided we were only going to shop at Walgreen's & CVS.....we had such a blast. A few years ago we did "Stockings Hung by the Chimney With Care" only.

The year we no longer had to go to a single toy store because my daughter had "outgrown" toys we bought gifts that brought out the kid in us that didnt have to do with toys...crayons, coloring books, paints, etc.

The goal is to have fun.

Why can't we have fun anymore?

I remember when I was a kid all the fun things we used to do... We would go out in the snow, sometimes waist deep for the adults to find a Christmas tree. We made a day out of that. Another day was spent decorating the tree. There wasn't nearly as many presents as people give one another these days, yet it seemed like the gifts meant a lot more. It was all about family. I miss Christmas from those days...

The store where my wife works never did get rid of layaway... And at her store people can have things on layaway for up to 10 months unlike the stores where they recently have begun having layaway again. It's just a very small chain in a few states unlike the national chains.

There was this really nice man in my neighborhood, Mr. Riley, who would grill hot dogs every year and each kid got a hot dog and a coke! I would eat my hot dog, wait a while and then go back. There were so many kids at his house that he never remembered that I kept coming back for more! There was also a lady, Mrs. Biesinger, who made homemade popcorn balls and sticky apples. Mrs. Stephenson would dress up as a witch and cackle and she had a steaming caldron on her lawn. She kind of scared me. I wasn't going to give out candy tonight but I just changed my mind. Thanks, McSpocky. I haven't thought about all that in a long time and it made me remember how much it meant to me as a child.

So, here's to a great fall and a beautiful start to the holidays! Now, I won't feel so bad that there are Christmas decorations in the store.

I have the ideal Man Cave in mind for me but the Grand Kids took over the place.

I gotta get me a small shed but large enough to put a recliner, King size pool table, dart board, mini-bar, 42in or bigger TV, couch (just encase I need a nap), and a bathroom. Tried with the spare room but now it's full of the kids toys.

Wifey won't let me get the shed until I remodel the kitchen and I have absolutely no plans to remodel it the way she wants...dang thing would end up being worth more than the entire house with her so called changes and upgrades. Might as well buy her a Restaurant because there is no way all that stuff will fit unless I use the living room to widen the space along with the Dining room.

Everyone, please shorten my name to Gen. I did not have that many selections. You see, "taken", "taken", etc. I was not even creative when I joined :-) So many have cool names. I was joining a news group and did not think there would be party rooms. RaisedByWolves, can I shorten your name too? RBW or RByW? Is that ok? Hey, remember the original movie Halloween? do you know were they got the mask for Micheal? It was a Richard Nixon mask that they messed up so it would look scary, somehow I think they could have left it the way it was and it would have had just as good an effect!

I thought the mask from the original Halloween with Mike Myers was a Captain Kirk mask that was inside out... Now I've got to go check...

Due to its shoestring budget, the prop department had to use the cheapest mask that they could find in the costume store: a Star Trek William Shatner mask. They later spray-painted the face white, teased out the hair, and reshaped the eye holes. Shatner admitted that for years he had no idea his likeness was used for this film. It was only during an interview that someone mentioned his mask was being used. He has since stated that he is honored by this gesture.

Down the street from me , they block off 4 block and have a HUGE holloween event for treat or treat, the one guy runs around with a REAL chainsaw running after kids, Some day someone will get hurt, scared the @!$%# out of my 3 yr old great niece, she, so her mom called the cops, they knew all about this and it was fine, Poor little kids going down that street were petrified, it should have been adult only, not little kids.

It is crazy and dangerous unless they take the chains off the saws, but I will bet if this has been going on for years, the kids tell the younGer kids about it and dare them to go to THAT house where they chase you with chainsaws and want to make sausages out of you. Kids like to scare each other and themselves. In the towns I lived in as a kid there was always a haunted house or the house where the witch lived, "Dare you to go trick or treat there."

I think this is the 10th yr, doesn't do any good to complain, authorities won't do anything about it.

Even if the chain is off, kids don't understand that, it is an accident waiting to happen, I do know the one year, the chain was ON the saw < I about had a @!$%# fit with the guy.

Though Brown and her children trick-or-treated all over Davenport Sunday night, one house on Kirkwood Boulevard stood out to them as the best they’d seen.

“They had guys out with real chainsaws. They were chasing the kids, yelling and screaming. They put a whole lot of work into it. It was really scary,” Brown said.

Ah, Pamela, he passed in 2007. Still had a mop of white hair, but the brain cells no longer clicked (Alzheimer's). He was not always the best dad, but he did love me, adopt me and kept me out of my mother's clutches as much as possible. Of course, he was gone from the house 24 hours every other day, and that was when she was her worst.

During high school, my girlfriends would decide on where to hang out and study after school by asking me "is your dad off today?" LOL He was cute - I think it is one of the rules for firemen, eh?

He was a great guy and a hero - and he was a transvestite in his off hours who built houses! Mom didn't know about his liking women's clothes when she married him and I think it was a source of her problems. The other sources was absolute greed and hate for most of the human race and her unabated alcohol abuse. She's gone, too. As a matter of fact, no living 'rents left - and it's rather nice. I do miss my Gram, but then she was a sane person who valued parties and fun and love.

That is such a cool story, RBW~! I love it. Don't like at all the fact that your mama was less than stellar and treated you badly [I have a stronger opinion, but I'll keep that to myself], but I like that your pop tried to keep you away from her. He must have worried about you mightily when he was out of the home. And I love that he was a transformer. I've often wondered how I would feel if I found out that my fella liked silky underwear and preferred his bras without underwire. I hope I would be one of those that would help pick out something cute. I find nothing wrong with straight [or gay] men liking the silky stuff. I kinda like it myself. Although there's something comforting in plain ol' cotton.

I'm glad you're normal and sane, RBW. I can't imagine having a mom like that. Js's mama left a little to be desired too. And yet you're both so well adjusted. My own Mama had a horrid childhood and I used to ask her how she could be normal after that. She said she learned how she didn't want to be.

Precisely, cobaltblue. It is easy to take a different path when one of the paths in front of you just feels so wrong. As my hubby always says, he wouldn't have ever dated my mother!

As to well-adjusted - well, when you see me screaming here on NV, you might have a different thought on that! Plus both hubby and son have psych degrees; so, hey, live-in help (or in my kid's case, just down the road).

Years ago, my daughter-in-law made a Beetlejuice costume for her hubby (my son). It was the black and white striped suit, and all the make-up, and bicycle horn in the pocket. Son looked GREAT.

Then, his son wore it one year.. Then, when I was working for an online company and had to fly to Irvine, Ca for a meeting one Halloween, I took the costume, along with the make-up and white hairspray color. I wore it to work that day and at the hotel that night. I was walking down a long hallway in the hotel and some people came around the corner at the end of the hall and they acrually screamed..lololo.

The next morning at check-out, I walked up to the desk (out of costume, of course), the clerk looked at me, and back to the office. Two people walked out and all three yelled at the same time "Beetlejuice, BeetleJuice, BEETLEJUICE!!!" I about fell out laughing.. it was GREAT! What a fantastic ending to an otherwise VERY boring company meeting!

I told my best buddies to give me their darling girl and head out for a Halloween party. No one said much about costumes so when my guy buddy opened the door with my tiny buddy he was a Teletubby...Tinky Winky and he was carrying a purse. That was just great as he's about 63 years old and kills me with his silliness. He was a big hit at the party.

Thinking of an old, run down shack...sits on the edge of the bayou waters. Tall cypress trees, hung with Spanish moss, at night looks like the souls of those who crossed the old hoodoo woman that lives there. If you walk quietly, across the spongy moss and leaves...peer carefully through the dirt covered panes of the shack...you might be able to catch her as she mixes her potions for Halloween night.

Funny!! My work telephone number ends in 6668. When I'd leave my number for a return call or if someone would ask for my number, I said "...6668." I cannot tell you how many people would say "do you realize you have 666 in your number??" Out of state callers rarely mention it, but people here in Texas are sometimes appalled. One woman asked me why I didn't change it~! So now when I leave or repeat my number, I say it with a hesitation between six six and six eight. I thought it so odd the seriousness of some people about it.

It is hilarious how some view 666! I can't take something like that seriously and laugh whenever anyone mentions it. The mechanic's wife was looking like she needed a exorcist when she had to write it down. I thought she was in for an apoplectic event. I had no idea such impact could come from a silly old number.

Try this next time they call. Tell them you were just thinking of buying what they're selling. Then ask them to hold on because your little kid just fell and hurt himself, and just put the phone down. They won't hang up because it's important for them to get what looks like a sure sale. After a while the call centre's monitor is going to get really pissed with them for wasting time.

If you have a lot of time to waste, you can also tell them that you had already bought the product and it's been nothing but problems. Then go on and on about how crapy the product is. In the meantime, while you are talking, take the phone into the bathroom, run the sink water, flush the toilet.. You can also make a few grunting noises..lolol..

I'll have to find that one hilarious call I sent to js via email one time. The guy picks up the phone and it's a telemarketer. Telemarketer says "Is John Smith there?" John Smith [I'm making up names here since I can't remember the ones in the actual call] says, "who is this and how do you know John Smith?" As the call continues, John Smith says that he's a cop and "John Smith" is laying on the floor dead. He continues by saying that he has to come to talk to the telemarketer because now he's become a person of interest. John Smith asks if telemarketer is his gay lover. The telemarketer is beside himself, freaking out and says he wants to hang up; the guy says if he hangs up, he will send the local police in his area to his home to inquire about his relationship with John Smith. Hilarious; one of my favorites.

I actually miss watching the radio, wonderful for the imagination

I've discovered a show that's on late night Saturdays in my area, although the station is in Salt Lake and the reception can get "iffy" (I'm in Arizona). The program is "When Radio Was" and they run old radio shows. Of course, they run from 12:00 AM Sunday morning for (I think) 3 hours, so I dose through a lot of them. If you google it (I don't know if it's "advertising" to put up the link), you can find a section on the main page that lets you search for stations that present it.

It looks like you can listen to shows online, too.

One of the radio shows they've run on the "When Radio Was" program was one I'd never heard of: Chandu The Magician. The hero is a guy who has learned "occult secrets" from a yogi and he uses his knowledge to fight evil. Fun stuff.

Anyway, it turns out that some Chandu movies were made in the 1930s - in the first one, Bela Lugosi plays the evil guy who is developing a death ray. I just ordered it from Netflix.

The odd thing is, I've got this vague memory of an old movie where some guy follows a woman to some island and down in the basement of some castle-like structure, he comes across a bad guy who is trying to steal a "death ray" from a scientist. If that's the same movie, I might be a bit miffed. =0/

Wow! G.H. you know the formula. When I had a summer home on a lake we used to go out and sit on the dock to watch the sunrise and listen to the loons calling with our "Gull Lake Coffee". Two thirds fresh brewed coffee and one third Bailey's Irish Cream. A wonderful wake-up. No cream or sugar required.

Ok - it's a bit early but what the heck - tequila! Will share my special Club Margarita recipe:

Shaker half full with crushed ice

2 part tequila

1 part triple sec

1 part Rose's Lime

3 part club soda

Lime wedge garnish

Shake and pour through strainer into martini glasses or, for the wimps, on the rocks!

Speaking of tequila worms and scary movies I remember seeing a movie where a guy swallows the worm, the worm reanimates, becomes huge, then crawls up the guy's throat and out his mouth. Very grotesque.

The Hearse Song ~ Anonymous

Do you ever think as a hearse goes by,
that you may be the next to die?
They wrap you up in a big white sheet
From your head down to your feet.
They put you in a big black box,
And cover you up with dirt and rocks.
All goes well for about a week,
Then your coffin begins to leak.
The worms crawl in, the worms crawl out,
The worms play pinochle on your snout.
They eat your eyes, they eat your nose,
They eat the jelly between your toes.
A big green worm with rolling eyes,
Crawls in your stomach and out your eyes.
Your stomach turns a slimy green,
And pus pours out like whipping cream.
You spread it on a slice of bread,
And that's what you eat when you are dead.
