The American College of Rheumatology (ACR) is proposing a new set of diagnostic criteria for fibromyalgia that includes common symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, and cognitive problems, as well as pain.

"These new criteria recognize that fibromyalgia is more than just body pain," said Robert S. Katz, one of the authors of the new criteria and a rheumatologist at Rush University Medical Center. "This is a big deal for patients who suffer symptoms but have had no diagnosis. A definite diagnosis can lead to more focused and successful treatment and reducing the stress of the unknown."

"There are numerous shortcomings with the previous criteria, which didn't take into account the importance of common symptoms including significant fatigue, a lack of mental clarity and forgetfulness, sleep problems and an impaired ability to function doing normal activities," said Katz.

No kidding. Someone is going to take this seriously? Yippee!

(As an aside there is research being done on the connection between fibro and bipolar. I have both. It will be interesting to see that develop.)

Has it been seeded already?

Not that I've seen. There's a lot of speculation and independent reports as well as anecdotal information. I've never seeded anything I thought was comprehensive and peer-reviewed. The connections are interesting. Migraine and bipolar. Parkinson's is also thought to be involved in the same part of the brain. Neurology/chemicals. Hmmm.

I did a quick search on Google. Most of the stuff I found was in forums. There was this tiny article... http://www.selfhelpmagazine.com/article/bipolar-symptoms

I may have some in my NAMI newsletters or from MHA. My doctors and I have talked about it. They have seen connections in their patients as well. One of the meds I take for the bipolar is also prescribed off-label for fibro.
